The Amazon jungle offers several areas to explore, and depending on your schedule, flying one way and driving the other can enhance the journey. If time is limited, flying to Coca or Lago Agrio is ideal, as both towns serve as gateways to the jungle.

From these towns, the adventure begins with a two- to three-hour journey down a major river via speedboat or motorized canoe. These rivers, often tributaries to the Amazon, feel like natural highways surrounded by lush greenery and abundant birdlife. Occasionally, you'll spot monkeys, dolphins, or other wildlife. The journey typically continues deeper into the forest, sometimes involving smaller canoe rides along narrow streams, before reaching a lodge.

A three-night stay is ideal, with the lodge serving as a comfortable and well-integrated base for exploration. These eco-friendly lodges are designed to blend seamlessly with the jungle environment and provide all meals, as there are no shops nearby. Activities include guided jungle walks in the morning, afternoon, and evening, offering opportunities to experience the region’s incredible biodiversity. Birdwatching is exceptional, with expert guides, often locals deeply familiar with the area, frequently identifying rare species. Pink river dolphins and pygmy marmosets are commonly seen, while harpy eagles, tapirs, and jaguars are rarer but thrilling sightings, sometimes captured on movement cameras.
The experience is immersive, albeit sweaty and insect-heavy, but the awe of exploring one of the planet’s most biodiverse ecosystems outweighs any discomfort. After two or three full days, the journey concludes with a return trip, leaving visitors with unforgettable memories of the Amazon.
