The beauty of Quito lies in its proximity to the breathtaking Andes mountains, one of the world's most stunning mountain ranges, accessible within just an hour. Nestled over 3,000 meters above sea level in the Ecuadorian Andes, the mountain pass we take serves as a gateway to an extraordinary variety of ecosystems.
From the rugged high-altitude páramo with sparse vegetation and extreme weather, you’ll gradually descend into the warmer, humid cloud forests. Here, the environment transforms dramatically—leaves grow larger, the air thickens with moisture, and wildlife becomes more abundant. Passing through the páramo, you might catch glimpses of iconic Andean fauna like the spectacled bear, soaring condors, and other high-altitude species. As you venture into the cloud forest, vibrant hummingbirds, striking birds, and even small monkeys become part of the landscape, alongside incredible waterfalls and some of the richest biodiversity on Earth.
A highlight of this journey is Papallacta, known for its spectacular views of the high Andes and renowned thermal springs—perfect for relaxation. Further along, near Cosanga, you’ll find one of the best locations for immersing in the cloud forest. This area is celebrated for its extraordinary birdlife, boasting some of the highest bird-watching counts in the world during International Birding Day. A bit further on, you’ll reach the Hollin Waterfall, one of many waterfalls along the route from Quito, each offering spectacular views and inviting stops along the way.
