The journey to Sierra Negra Volcano is an adventure in itself, with a 40-minute ride up to the start of the walk. Once you reach the rim of the second most active volcanic caldera in the world, the spectacle is undeniable. A walk along the rim leads to breathtaking viewpoints, often shrouded in rolling clouds. With patience, you may catch a glimpse of the entire caldera and even the distant Cerro Azul volcano.
As you continue walking along the crater, the landscape transforms from humid to arid, offering a unique experience without changing altitude. You'll encounter areas of pure volcanic desert, and fresh volcanic lava flows from a 1979 eruption at Volcan Chico, located on the outer rim of the volcano. The surrounding fumaroles and cones present a mesmerizing sight, with massive chimneys rising from the ground, sometimes difficult to see the bottom of.
The panoramic views from Sierra Negra are simply stunning, offering glimpses of Isabela Island and Fernandina volcanoes, Santa Cruz, and Santiago Islands. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including the elusive Vermilion Flycatcher, a rare sight in the Galapagos. While occasional sightings of tortoises and iguanas add to the experience, it's the dramatic change from humid to arid zones that truly captivates as you walk along the caldera's edge.
